For a Better Workplace, Speak Another Language

“Do you speak a language other than English?” asks the interviewer. \”A second language?\” He scans my resume. I scan his cramped office. We\’re in the final round of negotiations on a contract I want to win. “I speak the language of love,” I say. “Oh, that’s good! I have to use that.” He chuckles and pushes back into his ergonomic office chair. Shoulders back, he sits up a straight. “I speak love,” he says. His face scrunches into a mask of distaste. He shakes his head. “I don’t think that’s something I can say.” “You could have compassion as one of your languages,” I suggest. “That’s good. Compassion. We really need more of that around here.” I could only agree.   ©JoeyGarcia All Rights Reserved. Joey Garcia coaches teens and adults who desire more joy and personal agency in their lives.
